According to an article published in January 2023 by the New England Journal of Medicine, nearly one out of every four patients experiences an adverse event across the health care industry, and nearly one-fourth of those events are preventable. There are still significant opportunities to improve the safety of patient care. As health care clinicians across the industry, we have the obligation to speak up about patient safety and make improvements to processes and systems to avoid preventable harm.

The American Osteopathic Association Patient Safety Organization (PSO) was established to improve patient safety and health care quality by supporting physicians to build systems and refine processes to foster a culture of safety. Intentionally focusing on protecting conversations around patient safety, the AOA PSO has implemented a peer-to-peer learning program known as a Safe Table. The purpose of Safe Tables is to encourage physicians to share concerns and ideas related to the delivery of safe, quality care.

Physicians can use the Safe Table forum to discuss patient safety experiences, and best practices and learn from experts and each other. The setting provides a confidential, legally protected environment that allows health care professionals to discuss difficult topics. Each and every day, our physicians set the standard of safety in their practice. Your voice matters and shapes the quality of care throughout the nation.

If you have an idea for a Safe Table topic, please submit for consideration using our confidential online submission form.

Submit a topic

Although significant progress has been made over the past several years in improving the safety of health care, preventable patient harm still occurs.
