The AOA is providing grant funding to DOs, MDs, osteopathic medical students and PhD researchers conducting studies that address areas of study identified by the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Research and Public Health and approved by the Board of Trustees. These studies reflect the concept that while OMM\/OMT remains a strong tradition of the osteopathic profession, osteopathic medicine encompasses a broader philosophy that includes patient-centered care, empathy and the body, mind and spirit approach. The osteopathic philosophy embraces an approach that, while seeking and promoting health, also addresses disease states and the spectrum of patient care (e.g., primary, secondary and tertiary).<\/p>\n

The designated research topics must address the tenets of osteopathic medicine and explore the profession\u2019s patient-centered, empathic approach to care.<\/p>\n

Research focus areas\/notice of funding opportunity (RFA\/NOFO)<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Osteopathic manipulative medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMM\/OMT)<\/strong> | View RFA\/NOFO<\/a>
    \nProposals should explore the impact of OMM\/OMT on relevant disease states.<\/li>\n
  2. Acute\/chronic pain management<\/strong> | View RFA\/NOFO<\/a>
    \nProposals should apply the osteopathic approach to acute and\/or chronic pain management, emphasizing treatments and patient outcomes.<\/li>\n
  3. The impact of the osteopathic approach on chronic disease<\/strong> | View RFA\/NOFO<\/a>
    \nProposals should apply the osteopathic approach to chronic diseases, elderly care, the cost-effectiveness of osteopathic care in chronic diseases and\/or the impact on the quality of life through the life cycle.<\/li>\n
  4. Osteopathic distinctiveness<\/strong> | View RFA\/NOFO<\/a>
    \nProposals should explore if the osteopathic distinctiveness approach to patient care will translate into better outcomes.<\/li>\n
  5. OMM observational & explorative focused hypotheses research studies<\/strong> | View RFA\/NOFO<\/a>
    \nProposals should address one of 14 research hypotheses designed to investigate the successful effects of OMM on specific diseases.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Publication of research<\/h3>\n

    Research grant recipients must give the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine<\/a> (JOM) the first right of refusal to publish research findings generated from the grant.<\/p>\n
