The American Osteopathic Association\u2019s Bureau of International Osteopathic Medicine (BIOM) presented its 22nd Annual International Seminar during OMED 2020. In conjunction with the seminar, BIOM sponsored a global health competition open to all U.S. osteopathic medical students and resident physicians. The winners, with their submitted posters, are listed below:<\/p>\n
Best Overall Winner ($1,500 prize):<\/strong><\/p>\n Sean Bowling, OMS II, from Edward Via COM for his abstract \u201cShort-term medical mission students promoting culturally appropriate food intakes to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in Honduras.\u201d<\/p>\n Research Abstract Category:<\/strong><\/p>\n First Place ($750 prize): Farzeen Syed, OMS IV, from KCUMB, for her abstract, \u201cAssessing Barriers Towards Implementing Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination in Rural Kenya\u201d<\/p>\n Second Place ($500 prize): Sarah Pederson, OMS IV, from RVUCOM, for her abstract, \u201cUtilization of Traditional vs Contemporary Medicine in Global Indigenous Populations: the Maasai of Kenya\u201d<\/p>\n Narrative Medicine Essay Category:<\/strong><\/p>\n First Place ($750 prize): Marco Cunicelli, OMS IV, from Edward Via COM, for his essay. \u201cHow Does Limited Access to Routine OB-GYN Care Affect a Woman\u2019s Health?\u201d<\/p>\n Second Place ($500 prize): Amy Freeland, OMS III, from MSU-COM, for her essay, \u201cGuatemala: A Personal Narrative on the Disparity of Pediatric Care\u201d<\/p>\n Additional BIOM 2020 Poster Presentations:<\/strong><\/p>\n The competition\u2019s two categories were:<\/p>\n All entries had to be focused on the entrants\u2019 experiences with global health and\/or providing health care internationally. Schools\/programs had to review and attest to approval of each submission. Research projects also needed institutional review board (IRB) approval.<\/p>\n\n
